You need a preamp and passive speakers. Or if you have powered speakers, just the speakers and no preamp. The Dot can connect to a preamp via a minijack - 3.5mm cable or via bluetooth, if your Preamp has that wireless technology.

All you need is a wifi connection with internet. You will hook your phone to dot to set it up and connect it to you internet through your phone. Set up is extremely easy. After that buying the switches and hubs for smart home is all you need to control your home. Vivint alarm is a great starter to control your home. I bought two and 40.00 ea and that's it. You don't need any other Echos with the generation two.

It doesn't cost anything to make it work. Both Echo and Echo Dot just connect to your existing Wi-Fi.

All that is required is internet access through wifi at home and a amazon account.
