“I have Amazon Echo Shadow. Would the Amazon Echo Dot connect to it or would it run independently? My home is tri-level, so I would use the dot on the bedroom level. Shadow is in the kitchen/living room level. Thanks!”

Do you mean Echo Show and not Echo Shadow? And yes to both questions; they can be used together and independently. For example, if you ask Alexa a question, she will answer you on whichever Echo device you are closest to. If you wanted to play music on both (or all) Echo devices, you could say, "Alexa, play [music] everywhere."

Yes you will be able to connect this device with it. You can connect any Alexa device with any other Alexa device

I have both and they run independent. The app has an option to link/group them.
