Is this a stand alone device, or do I need the Echo for this to work? If it is stand alone, what is the difference between the full size Echo and the Echo Dot? null

This is a smaller version of the Echo. A full Echo is not needed for the Dot to work. The Dot just does not have the larger speaker built in, but I found the Dot speaker to be quite loud. Plus you can plug in external speakers to the Dot.

Its a stand alone. The only difference is the speaker. The dot has a speaker. It just doesn't sound as great.

Yes it is a standalone device. 3/4 of the full size Echo is a speaker. The Dot has smaller speakers. We connected it to a Sony speaker that was half price and the combination is better than the full size Echo and still under $100 total.

The dot is a stand alone product (requires wifi/internet access).
The only real difference is that the echo has an awesome speaker with it. So music sounds great. You can get a speaker to plug (or use Bluetooth) for the dot if you want to hear quality audio

It is a stand alone device with all the functionality of the Echo minus the high quality speaker.
