I have the tap do I need the the dot? null

The Dot and Tap serve different functions. Tap is great to use as a portable speaker but you have to push the button every time you want to activate Alexa. The Dot does not have a built-in battery, so it isn't portable, unless you use an external battery pack. What the Dot gives you is voice-activation of Alexa--which is huge. You can just say "Alexa, what's the weather?" or "Alexa, turn on the bedroom lights." from across the room and she will answer/follow your command. The Dot also has the advantage of allowing you connect to external speakers, either via the audio output jack on the Dot or via Bluetooth.

You do not need the dot to work with the ta, but the tap you have to push a button to wake it up and the dot you can be across the room and say the wake-up word

They work differently. Definitely get a dot. Worth the money.

It depends what your needs are... do you want more locations in your home/office to have access to an Echo? Other people want one in their office/rooms? Tap is portable, so it can go anywhere.

Only if you want more access to Alexa throughout your home. The Tap gives you portability and has better speakers. The Dot's low cost affords you expansion throughout your home and I find it very convenient to have acces to Alexa everywhere!
