You need a preamp and passive speakers. Or if you have powered speakers, just the speakers and no preamp. The Dot can connect to a preamp via a minijack - 3.5mm cable or via bluetooth, if your Preamp has that wireless technology.

Set up is extremely easy. After that buying the switches and hubs for smart home is all you need to control your home. Vivint alarm is a great starter to control your home. I bought two and 40.00 ea and that's it. You don't need any other Echos with the generation two.
