The smart plugs will work anywhere that they can connect to the recipient's home Wi-Fi router, they do not need to be anywhere near the Echo Dot to work. The Echo Dot should be place in whichever room the person will most likely want to use it, or at a mid-point between multiple rooms if they want to give commands from additional rooms. The Echo Dot will usually pick up commands within 20-30 feet (2 rooms width) depending on the layout of the home. I live in an apartment and have the Echo Dot in the living room and it can hear me from the bedroom, approximately 22 feet and one doorway. Note, the Echo Dot also needs to be able to connect to the home Wi-Fi router to be able to communicate with the smart plugs. The Wi-Fi router is most likely the "Internet box" provided by their Internet service provider.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Well it depends if she is alone and there's not to much noise around.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My Echo Dot can hear and understand me at about 20 feet with a normal or slightly louder speaking voice.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Echo Dot can hear commands from pretty much anywhere in a typical room (i.e. bedroom). I have my Echo Dot on a nightstand. I'm able to give commands to my Dot from within my bathroom (i.e. information request, play music, etc.). This will be a great Christmas gift (my opinion).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Very far! My echo dot often picks me up from the next room if I mutter Alexa.
