You don’t need the app open at all. Once it is setup you can have your phone turned off and it still works. I always use my Alexa to play music, tell me the weather and even turn on my LEDs all without having the app open.

Simply tell Alexa what you'd like to do! More advanced features like adding skills and routines can be easier using the Alexa app, but you don't need to worry about keeping a phone connected for basic functionality!
