• You may, depends on where you bought it.. generally the kindle is a proprietary device so all your books go through amazon.. you'd need a regular tablet to be able to download any other books that are outside of amazon

• A few. You can almost always find free books by classic authors. Some times authors provide one of their books for free. If you keep your eyes on the deal of the day and monthly deals you can find popular books for a buck or two. Amazon ended the free lending library and replaced it with the 10 buck a month unlimited library plan.
