Hello Chocolate! The Kindle Paperwhite does have a backlight that lights up. That is such a great question. Unlike traditional tablets and screened devices the kindle lights up using fewer LED's to maintain the E-Ink appearance. There is an auto adjusting sensor that will adjust the brightness based on your room or outdoor light or you cant manually adjust it yourself.
