“The salesman at Best Buy said this would allow me to open separate windows on each screen (one on my laptop and one on the AOC) So far I have not been able to do that. Is this monitor just a mirror image of my PC? I needed a screen extender.”

To extend the screens, You will need to right click on your desktop and go to your display settings. In those settings there is a couple options. For what you are wanting, Click the dropdown, and select "Extend these displays". Once you select that option, You can then drag your display in the box above ( the two squares represent the location of the screen) to where the screen sits. Hope this helps.
