• It "tells" your computer that the power is off (when it goes off) and then after the amount of time you specify, it will command the computer to do a proper shutoff. This is more desirable than a "hard" shutdown where the computer just turns off from losing power.

• The main advantage is that it allows your OS to detect a power failure and shutdown so that it does not experience an immediate power loss that could result in data loss or corruption. Also allows you to monitor battery status and power events.

• you hook up your pc to the ups via usb and if the power goes out you can set it up so that your pc will hibernate or power off after X minutes, it'll also notify you if the power was cut or the battery had to kick in because of line noise.
