“Does the battery recharge and last a lifetime? If not - is it replaceable? Last APC unit the actual battery died”

Thank you for your inquiry. The BN450M will recharge its battery. The normal life of the battery will be anywhere from 3-4 years, depending on battery usage, load percentage and operating environment. The batteries in the BN450M are not user replaceable.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Battery is replaceable. Take the screws out the bottom give a bit of shake and the bottom falls out. Battery inside you can pick up at battery plus for 45 with tax or much cheaper if you don’t care about quality. Takes about 5 mins to change the battery out.

I did the math -- I paid about the same for this unit on sale as I did for a replacement battery with my previous APC UPS, so I'll recycle this one (at Best Buy) and buy another (hopefully also on sale) when the time comes.
