“I already have two paired home pods and the sound is amazing. Will they work in a "quad" mode if I purchase two more? With the current pricing, I can get two more for almost what I paid for my first one at launch, a few years back.”

It should definitely work if your using an AppleTV. ( I can not speak to other options) They will be set up as 2 pairs, but just select both sets when setting up output. The speakers have a spatial awareness that analyzes and adjusts for their location.
