The algorithm Apple uses allows the sound to be distributed accordingly. I'm no audio engineer so my best answer would be to just check this link out. https://www.apple.com/homepod/

HomePod analyses the sound and decides where to bounce it, so you can get kinda a stereo effect, but it's not true stereo. For that, you'll have to buy two and pair them when the AirPlay 2 update releases later this year.
