Yes, with the series 2 apple watch you can send texts, receive texts, and make phone calls and receive phone calls. It does this by connecting with your iPhone via blue-tooth. When your iPhone is too far away from you for blue-tooth, it will connect through WiFi if your watch and phone are on the same WiFi network. The texting does not use a keyboard, so you will be either spelling out each word with your finger by drawing each letter, or using dictation... but with dictation you cannot easily fix the mis-interpreted phrases that can result. You can set up short pre-set phrases that you can do for quick responses, so that is helpful. If you have set a destination on your phones mapping app, your watch can tell you the directions instead of your phone, so that is helpful, if that is what you are asking.

Or, you can add a new account to your cell phone account, then, you don’t have to have your cell phone near. Then, you can use the watch just like a cell phone and call and text directly from it and access your contacts.
