“Is there different sizing for the band, female vs. male, or simply taking into consideration that our wrist varies in size?”

Generally, the smaller sizes are for women and bigger for men. Depending on Apple Watch women usually get the 38mm or 40mm and men get the 42 or 44mm...those numbers are the size of the actual face. My wife who has a small wrist went with the 38/40. That said, bands are pretty universal...pick the size face that best suits you.
