That is an apples/oranges kind of comparison. FiOS is Verizon's way of delivering Internet and TV over Internet to a household, based on fiber. Now, I don't know if Verizon provides a WiFi router as part of its FiOS package, and perhaps you are asking if this is better than the one they provide. That I would not know (and odds are they would change what they would provide). Looking at their site, they currently provide something called their Fios Quantum Gateway. That is probably fine for basic needs. But I don't know if it supports the advanced flexibility that the AC1750 provides (I kind of doubt it).

In terms of competitiveness? The Asus firmware does provide better options for managing your router and home network; comparable to DD-WRT's features. Look up AsusWRT for more information. In terms of internet service? This is only a router and does not provide internet service on its own. It will provide a wireless access point for your wireless devices and comes with a 4 port hub built in to provide 4 wired devices access to an existing internet service as well. It can also be very useful as more affordable option for a wireless repeater to extend the range of your wireless network (the AsusWRT firmware has settings to configure this).
