If you have a bad needle it could be harmful to vinyl. However it sounds like you may have a balance issue. If weight on the arm is too much or too little it will cause issues. Its important to have proper balance & speed to ensure proper play.
(Balancing is done with the round cylinder at the back of the arm.) Best of luck

When the stylus wears out you replace it. The turntable starts automatically at the push of a button, or you can move the arm to the track you want and cue down.
