The device is not powered up unless it is plugged in. Look under the left side of your steering wheel (where all the cables, wires, fuse box etc are at. You should see the little box plugged in very easily. If you can't see it and you're still unsure, you can go to AutoZone and ask them to check your car diagnostic port. They'll tell you in 5 seconds (or less) if this specific device is on there.

If you unplug the device, it will show your ex the exact location where it was last plugged. Make sure to remove the device fully from your vehicle because that's where I'm unsure if it can still br tracked without being plugged into your car.
