There is plenty of extra room in the filter to add extra coffee grounds to make the coffee stronger without overflowing the filter unless you go crazy. It has a mark about midway up the filter for average strength coffee. You can't fill it to the top but another spoon or two is not going to cause a problem.

This causes the grounds to go up over the filter and clog the entire machine. Leads to a huge mess all over the counter, and inside the water reservoir. I only use three tablespoons (for a half pot) and this has happened twice.
