Hi there, thank you for your question. If space is an issue you are able to stack the units. You will need to use one of our stack kits. We have model WTZ20410 - Stacking kit without Pullout Tray and model WTZ11400 - Stacking kit with Pullout Tray.

Yes you do . Otherwise you risk the top appliance falling during a spin cycle. It doesn't take up room at all.
