It depends on how you have your receiver set up. If you are looking to feed the sound from it to the Soundbar, then you use the optical cable. If you are looking to provide the sound for the TV and if your TV is a newer type, it could have an optical out and would be the preferred method and there is one less connection point.

As long as the thing which you are trying to connect has optical plug input you should be able to connect. I have connected my Bose systems which did not have HDMI to TV via optical cable and sound output is great.
