Although the paper tray appears to allow the use of envelopes, I have not been able to print any with this printer.

It will handle one envelope at a time, but not very well. It tends to squash and crease the envelopes. I had the same experience with my previous Brother mono printer. Otherwise, it's a great printer, but if you need to do a lot of envelopes, or want them to be really flat and smooth after printing, you might want to try a different brand.
