• Yes, the printer actually asks you if you would like to print in only black if one or more of the colors is low or out.

• I haven't run out of ink on any cartridges, but according to the ConsumerReports review. (https://www.consumerreports.org/products/all-in-one-printer/brother-mfc-j6935dw-392506/overview/), it does NOT print if a cartridge is empty.
