“I've had Canon Pixma printers before and didn't need an app to print. My last one just died and the trade in program one isn't a megatank and is n backorder I can't wait that long. Can I just print as I've always done or is it necessary to have the app?”

Need more info.. It supports AirPrint so you don't need an app for that and you an print from a Mac and presumably a PC without an app and probably a reasonably generic printer driver.
