Unless your home is 16 miles across, these should work fine. One pair is two items. So, unless there are more than two of you using them, one pair should be enough. It goes without saying that you need to buy enough radios for everyone with whom you wish to communicate. These are rechargeable by the same cable that charges a standard cell phone IF YOU USE THE BATTERIES THAT COME WITH THEM. However, they come with Nickel Metal Hydride batteries which, while better than the older technology Nickel Cadmium, are still a lower capacity than alkaline and Lithium based alkaline batteries (which are not rechargeable). The radios will run longer on alkaline batteries but then will not be rechargeable. They will interfere only with other radios on the same channel or, if they're close enough, possibly on a nearby channel, but that's why they have some 22 channels. Keep in mind though that the GMRS channels require a license (not that anybody seems to care) while the FRS channels do not. In all cases, the lowest power setting that can be used adequately should be used to limit interference to other radios, if these even have a power setting.

If you have an iPhone or most types of smartphones, you'll be able to charge them using the same USB block that you use to charge your phone with. That's what I did with the pair of radios I bought like these.
