I have a cheap Cobra radar detector just like the one shown here and it works really good, if you're passing your local 7-Eleven and the tones going off for the automatic door opener it automatically gets superseded by the KA band if there's a highway patrol trying to get your speed.... I've had my ka band go off several miles out ahead of me while the highway patrol was behind the semi truck up over a hill, these work better than people give them credit for.

Radar detection range varies depending on the environment but it will detect radar at a mile or more away. Automatic door openers which use radar can cause it to alert but it has a City mode to reduce these alerts.
