It does not. That is the main reason for purchasing this model. It figures how much it can draw from the heating or cooling wires before it trips. It uses that draw to power the thermostat. There is also a battery to make up any extra that's needed. I change the battery every eight years just because eight years has passed, not because I needed to. It works best if you have both heating and cooling capabilities, so it can draw from either. The older the furnace, the better, as it takes more to trip on heating or cooling.
