Kojima is attempting to create a new genre in his words. So, kind of hard to explain what 'kind' of game it is. The game has open world exploration, 3rd person fighting, but fighting is not always the answer. The main plot is connecting the east to the west. There are multiplayer mechanics that are similar to Dark Souls in a way, that we've seen so far. There are many videos that might help you. I'd recommend watching the many trailers and the Tokyo game show game play. It gives you the mystic and shows the general gameplay. Much is held back I believe though to keep from spoiling the game and, as Kojima put it, giving you the chance to experience it yourself. I paraphrase Kojima. I hope this helps. It is difficult to really define a Kojima game, even MGS was odd in its ways. But this game, is very different. I'm pre-ordered, but that is a personal choice. They're allowing reviews 1 week prior to release from what I hear.

As far as what kind of game, it is an open world, building, stealth, battling, mission based game where you uncover the story of the game while delivering packages across a crazy world. Guess it would be closest to the "adventure" label than anything.If you like Fallout I would say you would likely enjoy the game.
