Customers are saying

Customers regard the graphics, story, and soundtrack of Death Stranding as exceptional, frequently citing them as highlights of the game. However, some players found the controls and pacing to be less intuitive and slower than preferred, while others noted a significant amount of walking. The open world and price point also received positive feedback. Despite some criticisms, many players found the game's unique features engaging.

    It's a Hideo Kojima game.

Hideo Kojima is rarity in the world of high-budget video game production. He’s an auteur. The Metal Gear Solid games are all branded “A Hideo Kojima Game”. He has a certain sensibility, but there has also always been a sense in his games that he’s been held back. That was before he left Konami and formed his own independent studio, Kojima Productions, which just released its first game - Death Stranding. Describing this game is a challenge. The core gameplay loop is pretty simple. You play as a courier, and you have to walk from point A to point B without falling and damaging your cargo too much. There are hazards - rough terrain, bandits out to steal your cargo, and other enemies. It’s more challenging than it sounds, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t at times tedious. The real draw here, as it has been for me with Kojima’s other games, is the story. Death Stranding tells you both too much and not enough about the world the game takes place in. The first few hours of the game have only about half an hour of actual gameplay, with the rest of the time spent showing you the post-apocalyptic America that you’ll traverse throughout the game. When I bought my copy of Death Stranding, the cashier said that he had sold the game to two other people that day, and that neither one of them could tell him what the game was about. I told him, “I’ll be surprised if any of us can tell you what it’s about after we’ve finished it.” I stand by that. When you buy Call of Duty 16, or Madden 2020, you know exactly what you’re getting. What you get in Death Stranding is something you don’t get in many high profile games - something different. Something new. It’s weird. It’s kinda boring. It’s borderline nonsense. But it’s beautiful. It knows what it is and isn’t afraid to be just that. And that’s what keeps me playing.

I hike for my job and also have to carry equipment with me in remote areas and have to plan navigating the landscape in much the same way with equipment weight, safest paths or fastest routes, caution around bad weather, etc (minus the MulEs and BTs of course). I am therefore all about delivery games and this one blows your mind with the storyline, gameplay, and the characters. The atmosphere can be extremely stressful/suspenseful when it needs to be and also incredibly relaxing. The landscapes are beautiful. When you are hiking, the best part is getting a good view, listening to some good music and seeing a storm rolling in. That is this game.

I’ve been playing for a few hours now and have been enjoying the game so far. I have high expectations for the game because I’ve been a huge Metal Gear Solid fan and can see some similarities in game design however the game play is very different. There is a lot of cutscenes that are very enjoyable and lots of walking in mountainous terrains. I’m still undecided on how I feel about the game so far but I think I’ll like it. This is a very unique game.

If you are looking for a big budget game that is not like much else you’ve played and is not afraid to do totally wild things, then this is the game for you. It’s heavy on simulation, but navigating the environment is very fun and the game looks gorgeous. I love it.

Some might call it a glorified walking simulator, and in a sense, it is but nowadays with how homogenized game development is, seeing a triple A dev take risks like this is nothing short of a breath of fresh air

The gameplay is oddly compelling in that it is mainly focused on how you navigate the world to deliver packages throughout the world. Rather than simply going from point A to point B, you also need to manage a variety of systems: health and stamina, materials for crafting and using supplies and tools, player's balance, item and equipment degradation, etc. Traveling in New areas can be daunting and stressful at times, but it's usually a cathartic feeling to finally reach your destination. Furthermore after exploring a new area and connecting it with the network, you unlock a type of shared world social feature where you can find and make use of supplies and tools that were left by other players in their game. For myself, it's the first online feature since Journey that makes an otherwise single player game feel like a collaborative experience that you share with others. There are also elements of combat and stealth throughout. While they may seem simplistic in their respective ways at first, each have systems that are never directly taught to the player, but when discovered through experimentation add a new layer of depth and strategy (i.e. the ability to throw packages at human enemies during combat). That said, the game itself is not difficult, especially for those who play games regularly. Side note - at the time of writing this, I have played the game for about 10 hours. Though I have yet to see how the story plays out, I can say that so far it is intriguing and the early hours do a fair job of setting the tone and themes of the narrative, and make the otherwise complicated lore of the world relatively easy to follow and digest. Graphics are stellar in presentation, and the the sound design matches closely in its quality. This may not be a game for you if you're wanting or expecting an action packed adventure. But if you don't mind something more experimental, then I would say go in with an open mind and you will find enough to appreciate in this game.

I played the previous games Metal Gear series that Hideo Kojima developed with a team. This game is very different under Hideo Kojima's new studio. I played this for a couple of weeks and the story is interesting. The player's job is delivery items and has to hike and fight against supernatural monsters and bandits that try to steal items that player carrying. There are some obstacles in the way and have to use materials such as a ladder or rope to get through. Beware, this game would encouraging you to go outdoors for camping and hiking instead of play video games. The graphic look beautiful with my Samsung 4K with HDR. The rumble on the Dual Shock 4 controller is awesome and feels like Rumble HD. Overall the game is great and must own for PS4 collection! I haven't completed this yet and heard it should be about 50 hours. I have other things to juggling and hope to finish this game as soon as I can!

I loved it but I can't deny I was frustrated at the UI, the controls were overall polished but clunky at times, and the story was incredibly interesting but I felt was executed in lackluster way. Still, I had an amazing time playing this game. The world is desolate and intriguing. I wanted to explore every inch of it, climb every mountain i saw in the distance and soak in every second I was in it. The micromanaging and planning your route was rewarding when executed, and the shared user experience made it special when i saw how structures impacted others journey from likes. It was fun and definitely more memorable than most games I've played this gen. Plus there are no loot boxes or microtransactions that hinder the experience (exception of a monster energy and TV show ad, but I'd take that any day over lb and mtx). Give it a shot if you find it interesting, I found it a worthwhile journey!

    That hollow feeling...

So this game was polarizing. Some people wrote reviews destroying the game, others fell in love. I fell into the latter half. The game starts out slow, and that's where most critics focused their reviews. The first 3-4 hours of gameplay it does feel like a "walking simulator", but the first 3-4 are in a "starter" area that isn't meant to give you all the perks. Once you begin to understand the mechanics and reach upgrades and vehicles the entire gameplay changes. I spent two weeks straight playing this game. I woke up, Death Stranding, and I would continue playing throughout the day. The mechanics are a blast once you figure them out, and the tone of the atmosphere matches the game beautifully. The story is what really got to me. I'm very impatient with games and usually skip cutscenes to hop to the action. This isn't what Death Stranding is about. The combat mechanics are fun and unique, but the story is mind-blowingly good and one of the few games that made me emotional at various points throughout to the point that without giving spoilers, as I'm completing the final mission I was in tears. I spent 90 hours or so to beat the game since I took a slow approach to really enjoy it, and once I finally finished it I had that "hollow" feeling that most people that have played a truly amazing game feel. If you keep an open mind to something unique and enjoy a fantastic plot, this is the game for you and I've recommended it to every friend of mine. I beat it 7 months ago and I've yet to find a game that even comes close to filling the void this game left. Probably going to pick up the PC version to do another playthrough.

This is by far my favorite game of 2019. Great graphics, soundtrack, story, and world to explore. While there isn't much action, it's refreshing to see a game that doesn't totally consist of shooting the "bad guy". This won't be a game for everyone but as long as you understand what it's about going in, you'll enjoy it. Most of the time you'll be walking (or driving) from place to place delivering things for people. While this did get old after a while, the world building from other players by way of ladders, bridges, and roads was really nice to see. I actually went back after I finished the game and built most of the road sections in hopes it would help someone on their play-through later. Really great concept and glad I played through this game.

This game just oozes originality. Never have I played anything like it and I found the main bulk of the gameplay (delivering packages) oddly therapeutic. The story was extremely interesting and acted beautifully, though at times it could be hard to grasp (at least for me it was). I haven’t been so engrossed into a game’s world since Red Dead Redemption 2. I have only a couple gripes, for one the pacing and a somewhat clunky combat system. When I play games I’m looking for new experiences and originality and this game gives me that and then some. The soundtrack is phenomenal too! 8.5/9 out of 10
