Customers are saying

Customers regard the graphics, story, and soundtrack of Death Stranding as exceptional, frequently citing them as highlights of the game. However, some players found the controls and pacing to be less intuitive and slower than preferred, while others noted a significant amount of walking. The open world and price point also received positive feedback. Despite some criticisms, many players found the game's unique features engaging.

A Game You Cannot Put Into Words

I picked this game up the day it came out, after months of anticipation. My friends have all asked me what the game is about, or to summarize the game for them. And honestly, it's hard to put in to words. You play as Sam, who is for-all-intents-and-purposes, a deliveryman. The game is set in a post-Apocalyptic America. You must deliver packages, and are tasked with keeping America connected by linking posts you encounter along the way. You face challenges from the terrain (which gets harder to traverse with the more packages Sam is carrying), BTs (who are supernatural beings that can attack you unless you stay quiet), and other monsters found littered across the vast lands. You essentially have to make it from D.C. to the West Coast on foot, or motorcycle, or any other vehicle you can find, salvage, and repair. Of course, you aren't completely alone. You have a robotic arm called a Odradek, which scans the terrain's topography, and sense's BTs and other evil lurking around. You also have a BB Pod which is a baby in a clear pod, that you connect to, in order to keep it alive. While Sam can sense when BTs are present, BB allows you to see them. With Hideo Kojima at the helm, you are getting a beautiful masterpiece that is part game, part cinematic experience with a star-studded cast with Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead fame), Guillermo del Toro among others. The game is said to be a slow lull in the early hours of the game, with it picking up as you progress in both skills and chapters. If you're playing on PlayStation Pro and a 4K TV with HDR, you are in for a real treat.

This game is great and I really enjoy it, with that being said though this is a divisive game that you will either like or not so I suggest you watch gameplay to see if it interests you. For me it is very satisfying with a great story and graphics, there are some flaws and I can understand the people that don’t like this game because it’s not the typical type of game, I definitely don’t think it’s a bad game I thinks it’s just either your style so your into it or it’s not your style so you won’t like it. It’s definitely worth a play for those who are interested

Death Stranding is a tough game to rate. I'm giving it 3 stars because I feel that's the right rating, but I also think that it's a slightly above average game due to some of its brilliance. Sadly, though, the repetition of busywork brings down the enjoyability of the game. Graphically, Death Stranding is a largely impressive & beautiful looking game. The environments & character models are simply superb, and it all looks incredibly crisp on the PS4 Pro. That said, there could be a little more diversity to the setting. Traversing the world often looks very samey. Gameplay wise this is a game about busy work. You're a delivery man. That's literally the entirety of the game. Yes, there are some combat encounters, but they're a small part of the overall game. I didn't love the gameplay, but I also didn't love it. There were times where I got bored, though. Now what I really loved about Death Stranding was the story and characters. Everything is so odd, out there, and quirky in true Kojima fashion. If you're a Metal Gear fan, you'll definitely enjoy this aspect. Death Stranding is a weird game thus it's hard to rate, but I feel 3 stars is fair. Not amazing, not bad. It has some good, it has some bad, but it's a very interesting game just because it's so different and weird. If you like weird, give it a try. Why not?

Look, I was incredibly excited for this game to finally release. I started it up right away once delivered on release day, and I almost immediately knew what this game was. It’s slow. Like really slow. You spend hours simply walking (eventually you do get a vehicle) from place to place hiding from this game’s version of the bad guys. Yes, eventually you can engage them, but that’s really not the purpose of the game for the majority of it. The game is beautiful if not a bit clunky. The weight system is tedious and having to constantly keep him balanced feels more like work than it does fun. I read a review prior to this game releasing that said “This game isn’t fun, and that’s okay.” Is it though? I play games to escape the real world where I can have a few hours of stress free living (in most games!). This game just feels like a job and can absolutely be stressful but for all the wrong reasons. Stressing out because an enemy is breathing down your neck in Alien, carefully maneuvering around clickers in The Last of Us, these are proper examples of good stress in games. The stress in Death Stranding feels like the same stress we get at work. I can’t give this game less than 3 stars because I do appreciate the obvious amount of time and work spent to create it. It looks really well done, and the voice acting is pretty great for the most part. However, I play games to have fun, and this game just isn’t meant for that I suppose.

Definitely a unique experience. Lots of terrain traversal and delivering goods back and forth. Strange and unique characters and story that only Kojima can conjure up. The idea is that this game parallels our current world and society. We are increasingly becoming more isolated and losing important real life relationships and experiences. Your character Sam is trying to reconnect everything. The more selfless acts you put into the world (building roads, delivering goods, creating ziplines etc.) the more you will see appear in your world from other players, helping you traverse it easier. It is not an extremely exciting game, rather a reflective experience. There are scavenger human enemies and beings from the stranding side, along with bosses and evil characters. When you reach the top of a beautiful mountain and look down over the Icelandic plains, and the trance like soundtrack is playing, it can trigger really reflective personal moments. A very interpretive game. If I was a kid, teen, or in my 20s i would probably abandon this game quickly. If your someone who is a little older and has watched society change and become increasingly isolated due to the internet, there is a deep emotional experience on offer here. Running packages is tedious but becomes easy when you become integrated with other players and help eachother out. You will either love or hate this game, very interpretive. Wasnt the most exciting game but very appreciative of the message and teaching Kojima had on offer. Proud to have understood it. Affected me.

Death Stranding is one of the most awe inspired gameplay designs I have seen this generation. On top of an innovated conceptthe game tackles some serious heavy emotional strings that really resonated with me personally. Having lost both my mother and unborn child recently the way the game tackles death and the beaches really helped me cope with my own personal losses while Sam Porter was going through it as well. I absolutely loved the story and the interconnected world that the strand system introduced. Highly Recommended

Forest in the rain? That’s the best way I can describe this game. One of the best looking games of 2019. Best ambience and music. It’s a whacky Kojima story as usual and gameplay mechanics are either love it or hate it type of relationship. There is no middle ground hear. You will either absolutely love this game or absolutely hate it. Takes anywhere from 30-300 hours to beat depending on how much you want to accomplish, how much you want to explore And how many side missions you do.

Story is intriguing, the game-play varies between relaxing and full of action. Story will definitely get you to want to keep playing, since not only is it long enough, but stays interesting all the way to the end, always unexpected but fascinating. Almost one of the best video games I've ever played. Seen a few bad reviews. Game is not for everyone. It's not a instant rush and gratification game.

I've been a huge Hideo Kojima fan from his Metal Gear series and was hesitant to buy this at release. But for $20 I felt that it was a good price point for a video game. For me it was a slow start but eventually the pacing picks up. It's definitely not for everyone and there's an adjustment to the playstyle. I felt it was a great game and got platinum on playstation.

Death Stranding is a controversial game in that the gameplay is not for every ones taste but you will enjoy the game if you find its pacing to your taste. Personally I have never disliked any game by Video Kojima, I always enjoy his weird and frankly overly convoluted stories to be fun. Again graphically another playstation title that blows you away.

Let's get one thing out of the way: If you don't like Hideo Kojima's style, you will likely not like this game. I don't mean for that to sound pretentious, and it shouldn't be taken as such. Hideo Kojima has a very unique art and directorial style. He likes his narratives slow and somewhat heavy handed. The dialogue is so on-the-nose as to invoke a cringe at times. He named the lead female character, a woman who constantly remarks how she isn't as fragile as she looks, "Fragile." The game is unlike any I've ever played. Different in the best of ways. In a decade where we seem to get the same basic genres over and over again, this is a breath of fresh air. That said, it is slow. It is plodding. You need to WANT this kind of experience. You will spend hours delivering pizzas, carrying huge loads of material from one bunker to the next. Your character, Sam (played by The Walking Dead's Normas Reedus), will silently trudge for virtual miles, breaking the silence with a random sigh or grunt. And yet, somehow, this game is carrying me along. It's passionate, it's full of heart, and it wants to connect you. The manner in which you interact with millions of others online is...well, I've never seen anything like it. The first time I found a random bit of equipment left in a locker--meant to be shared by another player--it felt like a lifeline. It's hard to explain, but you yearn for the small moments of connection. You relish when cooperation leads to grand structures that enable you to do your tasks with ease. Death Stranding is a bizarre game. You might love it. You might not.

I came close on passing up on this game but boy I'm glad I didn't... It's an amazing experience which I never thought I would enjoy. When I first played the game, I have no clue what's going on or who my enemies are... It was a chaotic mess trying to figure out the inventory and how to organize them. Sometimes I had forgot to bring the items to my quest which I then had to go back and grab them... I was fed up and decided I would sale the game to Book Off but since they were closed due to the pandemic, I tried to give the game one last chance. I was determine to learn how to optimize my inventory, how to read the map properly, how to use certain items during my journey and figure out how to avoid/fight BT's and terrorist groups. And wow, glad I gave it a second chance, I'm loving it, the graphics, music, storyline and game-play are all superb. This is an amazing game and I like it better than Metal Gear Solid series. I'm playing this on a PS4 Pro with 4K 75" TV, the graphics is beautiful!! So bottom like is there's a deep learning curve to the game but once you past that and progress further, you'll see where the game shines.

First off, story has always been the draw for me when it comes to Kojima's previous games, but I found this one lacking. I felt it was ridiculous in ways no MGS game was. It often felt like the game was actively challenging my suspension of disbelief. A lot of the moments meant to be hard hitting often felt unearned. The lack of on-screen time spent developing the characters made it hard to care about what happened to them. I ended the game really only sort of liking two of the characters, maybe 3, and hating almost all the rest. Interactions with NPCs felt empty. I admit that I may have gotten more out of the characters if I read the novel worth of supplemental text and npc emails, but it's not written in a way that makes me want to really dig into the content. Reading an actual novel would be a more worthwhile experience imo. I was willing to give the gameplay a chance, but imo it remained tedious, frustrating, and unrewarding throughout. Spending many hours developing upgrades and equipment does ease some of the struggle the simplest actions invoke, but it still feels unrewarding when even walking in a straight line on a gentle slope in many cases still causes you to tumble over. The vehicles help, but the often inexplicable physics tend to blunt their effectiveness on anything but roads. The game always seems to stand in the way of its more interesting ideas being enjoyable. There's definitely a metaphor about life in there, but while it intent seems to be "the struggle is worth it," more often than not it left me feeling nihilistic. The online mechanics seem interesting on paper, and can make the game experience marginally more reasonable, but without the ability to actively coordinate and communicate, it often feels hollow. The placement of other player items might as well have been generated by a rogue-like randomizing algorithm. I didn't feel that the "likes" system made up for this. If you build the roads, you get buckets of likes in a batch without knowing who sent them, and the structures you try carefully placing largely get ignored by other players (which likely has to do with how your structures take time to propagate to other players' worlds and are shared randomly, preventing coordination). There's definitely a message sent about the importance of making human connections, but this is presented as "connections" ("likes" that you can't actually do anything with) with NPC characters that have paper-thin depth and the faceless internet masses. There are some upsides, hence the second star I gave this game. For one, the visuals are fantastic (with the caveat that the facial expression animations often dip well into the uncanny valley). And secondly, the music is absolutely fantastic (with the caveat that you barely ever get to hear it, since it only plays in certain points, each track plays only once, and there is a music player but it can only be used in a non-gameplay "mode"). I do greatly appreciate the game for introducing me to these musicians, however. If you approach this game with a sort of academic mindset, you might get more out of it than I did. As game for people who love both inventive and satisfying mechanics and a straightforward but rich and impactful story that doesn't require immense leaps of logic to follow, I can't recommend this game.
