You need to plug it in into a outlet to supply power to the monitor and cameras, so yes they need to be near an outlet. I use extension cords. The wireless means that the monitor and camera can talk to each other without wires, therefor it is wireless.

You can use extension cords with the cameras if needed. We recommend using extension cords rated for the environment it will be run through. Outdoor installations should use an outdoor rated cable.
