I believe the internal amp only powers the subwoofer. I have the 9060 center channel and when I listen to two channel music, only the subwoofer is making any sound because I have the subwoofer cable plugged into the LFE port on the back of the speakers so only the sub gets the low frequencies. So in answer to your question, I believe the towers would work the same way as long as you have regular speaker wire, hooked up to the terminals in the back of the towers and also have the subwoofer cable going to the LFE port on the back of the towers, I think it would only send the subwoofer signal

One could connect an RCA LFE signal to the speaker and no speaker connection using it as a Subwoofer. The BP-9040 can also be connected as a typical speaker using speaker wire only; the internal X over will feed the amplifier the Low Frequencies amplifying the signal to the Bass driver.
