G sync is not your worry here, it's more of what your frame rate will be. With an i5 and a 1060 I recommend sticking with a 1080 p screen. 

1440 is going to be too demanding and you will not be able to really reach 144hz. Get a nice 1080p monitor with g sync, 144hz. 

G sync will make lower frame rates look smooth, but the idea is too stay at high frame rates and use g sync if you need too. 

For your own sake and for your wallets, stay at 1080p and you will enjoy gaming on PC much much more. 

144hz at 1080 looks better then 60 at 1440. Believe me.

If you lower your game's settings, yes. It very much so depends on the game though.
If you're playing CS:GO, then you should be able to max out your settings and still get well over 200fps
League of Legends, no problem at all
Rainbow Six Seige, you may want to use the Medium presets
Call Of Duty - BO3 or later: Medium presets with low shadows
PUBG - Medium presets with Anti-A turned off

I have a GTX1080, however, I cannot get Black Ops 3 running above 120 FPS at the highest settings at 1440p.

for your card, you'll definitely save much more money buying a 144FPS 1080p monitor.

All Nvidia GPU's support GSync . You should not have a problem with that.
