• It should link to it just fine , you will need to install the dji fly app and yes the phone sits in the top of the controller

• Yes, to the controller up on top. I have the iPhone 11 Pro and it works fine. DJI loves IOS but Android is fine as well.

• Yes it can be used with the Samsung S9. The remote connection wires in the kit offer connection to phones that have USB-C, Micro USB as well as apple lightning connections. The answer to your second part of the question, is both. The phone would be mounted on/to the controller. To help with this, see the image attached.
