It is a protector for the end of the cord. It is removed before connection.

End plug covers are securely dangled from the cord. The covers are snugly fitted over plugs, but simply pull free.

It’s just a protective cover to keep the optical connection from getting damaged when not connected. It pops right off...not a problem.

Yes, just a protective cap. Hook up was easy, once I figured out if the other end went to the TV or satellite receiver. (Goes to the TV).
