“Now that ecobee has abruptly discontinued their API Access / Developer Functions this product's usefulness has been reduced significantly. I bought it for those features so now it's pretty much useless to me. Can I get a refund in this situation?”

I am hoping that ecobee brings back the developer subscriptions and starts issuing new API keys. But there doesn't seem to be any definitive timeline or guarantee that they will. In the meantime, if you are using something like Home Assistant for your automation, HA says "you can use the HomeKit Device integration as a fully functional alternative."
