epson I have hd situation with my WF3540 printer, and before the actual printing, I get a message that states one of my color cartridges is either low on ink or actually out of ink, and I am given the option to print in black only. For the prefered answer to you question though, I might suggest contacting Epson customer service for yo specific printer model.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hi there. It might depend on both which ink has run out and the type of printer you have. For example, I have an Epsom Workforce printer, and if my black ink runs very low, the printer will present me with an option to print in black using a composite of the remaining inks. I've found that it's not the "blackest of blacks", but a reasonable result until I can replace the black ink cartridge. Not sure if that helps you, but just my experience.....
