“I bought this printer primarily to make photo copies. I was surprised that I ran out of ink almost immediately after startup I then bought two more cathrdges and one was gone before I made 50 copies. Is this printer an ink guzzler?”

I don't think this printer uses up ink any faster than any other printer per print. The deal is that the cartridges are smaller for home use, so the ink won't dry up. so yes for pictures it will cost you more per picture.
