Hi CADreamer, It depends. If a color cartridge is expended, you can continue scanning and printing using only black. We recommend replacing expended cartridges as soon as possible. If the black cartridge is expended, you must replace it before the XP-8700 will resume operating. Regards, Mark - The Epson Team.
