No it goes black until you flip your wrist, or are getting a text or email.

It goes into to sleep mode. Must push button or can set to activate when you raise up your arm.

The screen doesn't stay on constantly. It has a "quick view" option that can illuminate the screen when you turn your wrist to view it. Otherwise it can be turned on by double tapping the screen or pressing a button.

It goes to sleep mode and requires movement to wake it up. I like this design much better than the Fitbit Surge. I would definitely recommend.
