Yes, your phone has to be with you and within the Bluetooth sync range of your phone (check the specifications on your particular phone model).

I have been outside and in my basement while my phone was in my bedroom and it let me know who was calling. I would say the farthest away I've been is around 300 ft but I have not tried farther.

The Fitbit will display when someone is calling. No do not have to have your cellphone close for it to the distance.

Im not sure of the distance to receive calls. I haven't heard any complaint from the wife. So it must have pretty good connection for receiving calls
