Will it count your steps if you use a cane? Don't know how it tracks steps and hills. Can it count the short steps of a person using a can?

Yes. I work In a hospital setting and tried it with a Cain to see. It just wasn't as accurate but still was really close.

It tracks steps done on an elliptical machine, so imagine that it would be able to track with a cane as well

I know it will track short steps because I was in a boot for a couple of months and it still tracked my steps. I have it set on my non dominate arm. I believe that will help.

I also have a short stride. I have set mine to watch the counter as I walk to check the accuracy. It has always been spot on. I don't see how using a cane would cause any problems since it goes by muscle movement. If you are going to wear it on your dominate arm you will have to go on the web site to change the settings for that and adjust the sensitivity. It is set to default to the non-dominate arm to read movement. Hope this helps and you have fun walking.

I wear my Fitbit on my ankle so it tracks every step. Sometimes if you are walking and holding on to something, it won't track your steps when wearing it on your wrist.

I'm sure it would mine tracks steps even when I am holding onto a shopping cart. I have the charge HR model.
