Any reduction in humidity can help reduce the possibility of mold. You will have to clean up the existing mold using white vinegar or it will just spread.

If you or your family have been experiencing more than the usual "colds" etc, it may be from the mold. I bought this dehumidifier for my basement which has a mildew smell. I think it will help to remove the moisture from the air, but without knowing how bad your mold is, you may need more than one and/or you may need to install a french drain or put vapor barrier on your walls. If your mold problem is not in the basement but in a damp room like the bathroom, you will most likely need to install a vent.

We purchased a home that had some mold removed from the attic space above the room we use this unit in, an enclosed porch with obvious moisture problems. We were experiencing a lot of condensation on the windows and there was a musty damp odor to the room. Both issues have resolved since we started using this dehumidifier and keeping moisture under control year round will certainly help prevent mold growth.

Your furnace will keep the area dry. You could also use a fan to circulate your dry interior air at this time. There are anti fungal products you could use to scrub the walls down at this time. This worked for me, hope it helps you as well.
