My ten year old Gold Star 50 pint finally died and I went and I picked this one up. I really like it. Impressive fit and finish and NO rattles or buzzing. I set it on 40% and it will run until the room gets down to 35%, then the compressor will cycle off and the fan will continue to run for 3 minutes to dry out the evaporator coil and then it shuts down. When the humidistat reads 45% it will start up again. My only issue with this is that within 5 minutes after shutting down the humidistat will start reading the moisture within the machine and do a false restart. Only to shut back down a few minutes later. The solution is to have a small fan blowing on the humidistat on low, (it's under the air filter, top left corner). My Gold Star needed a fan blowing on it as well. In the continuous operating mode the fan is not needed. When the unit is idle and there is any water in the tank the humidistat will eventually read 70%, even if the room is only 45% to 50%. Burns a little over $30.00 a month in electricity if the compressor is always running. Modest heat output. It is putting 530 watts of heat into the air. On a rainy day it will keep up with 1400 sq. ft. with no support from the AC. The tank will fill every 20 hours if it's humid outside. Much nicer than the outgoing model (FAD 504 DWD). On this one the air flow is much more horizontal than vertical so I can't point the dehumidified stream of air where I need it to go. And they added a locking tab to the water bucket handle so it won't rattle. I have it outside my bedroom door with the fan on medium. With the exhaust pointed away from the bedroom. I can sleep with it running. A bit too loud on high though. The pitch of the fan and the compressor is constant so it does not draw attention to itself. I find it to be a pleasant white noise. I live on a slab so I don't know how it will sound on a wood floor. On low it's quiet. On medium it does not bother me unless the exhaust is pointed at me and I am sitting close to it. I reserve high for daylight hours when I can put some space between me and it. Once a month I put 2 tablespoons of clorox into the tank to keep slime from forming. I also bought the 70 pint and eventually returned it. It was quite a bit noisier when the humidity was high. They look like identical units. And they sounded the same the first ten minutes after a start up. But the longer they ran the louder the 70 pint would get. The 70 pint pulls an enormous amount of water out of the air compared to the 50 pint. I also added an external filter on top of the existing one. I see no easy way to open this up to clean the evaporator coil. I had to clean the Gold Stars coil once a year but it was poorly designed and let a lot of unfiltered air get inside the machine. The Frigidaire seems very tight by comparison. If it lasts I will be delighted. Reading the reviews on Amazon for the latest generation of Chinese built dehumidifiers was discouraging. High failure rates for every brand.

      Excellent Dehumidifier

My old dehumidifier (a Kenmore) finally gave out after about 13 years of reliable service. I reviewed many brands and finally settled on this one. The Frigidaires generally have very good reviews from the sites I looked at, so I was OK to go ahead and try this one. When I went to the store, I noticed that they had these newer versions in stock. Our basement gets very humid in summer, and there is one room in particular that has no windows or ventilation, so it is particularly humid and damp smelling. Our basement area that I dehumidify is around 900 sq. feet. When I first turned this on, the built-in humidistat registered over 80%. After a day or two it had taken it down to about 50%. I keep it at 55%, which works great so far. One thing to note about this unit is that IT DOES TURN COMPLETELY OFF when it reaches the desired humidity level (within a range actually). I read reviews about other ones, even Frigidaires, that do not turn off the fan, even after the desired humidity level is reached. Only the compressor turned off on those. Anyway, this one completely turns off and on which is good. I purchased the 70 pint version at first, but it consumes more power than I was comfortable with (1 HP) and the efficiency of this unit is the same as the larger unit, surprisingly. I returned it unopened and exchanged it for the middle size. We have a floor drain in the basement - I just used the included nozzle and a short piece of garden hose to drain. Very easy and I don't have to worry with emptying the bucket. No leaks or anything. One thing to note about this unit - the air blows out the right hand side of the unit not the front. This actually works well for my case, due to where our unit sits and the location of the most humid room (to the right). This may or may not matter to you, but be aware. I think the noise level is average. All humidifiers make noise, this one seems about like the rest. It's not like a freight train and it's not like a whisper either - but I want a dry basement. The controls are nice. Easy to read and bright. You can delay either start or turn off. I don't need this feature and haven't used it - but it's probably a plus if you need it. I've had this about two weeks now and it's running great so far. I would definitely purchase this brand/model again. I hope it will last - only time will tell.

Don’t waste your time on this unit! Short lifespan

Don’t waste your time on this unit. Mine failed 11 months in and was only used during last summer. I called Frigidaire customer service and was told they do not repair this unit. They will not provide replacement through mail and will get back to me on how to get a replacement from a retailer without a receipt as it was a gift. Told me will have a place to exchange or buy back plan within 2 business days and to call back if I do not hear back after 3 days. That’s more than 2 weeks ago and ever since, I have been given the run around and one representative even told me she has a claim number for me that has been approved to go the Best Buy to get a replacement. Went to Best Buy and was denied a replacement. Called Frigidaire customer service in Best Buy store and was told previous representative misinformed me and that the claim is sent for reprocessing now and I will get a replacement notice in 2 days. Wonder how long before this is resolved.

Amazed at how quickly the tank filled with water sucked from the air! I used this in a small apartment to reduce the humidity during summer. It worked very, very well. My Canary home security showed a significant drop in humidity and an increase in air quality. The air felt breathable, clearer and fresher. Unit is easy to move around as it has four wheels and a handle. Very sturdy unit. Seems to be well built and the design looks good. It runs quietly in my opinion. It's very easy to operate but be sure to read the manual to get the full benefits. One thing to note is that it replaces humid air with warm air. In a small space the air can get hot after about an hour or two of continuous usage at the highest setting. Overall this dehumidifier made the air much more comfortable. I would recommend this dehumidifier.

I've been using dehumidifiers in my basement for over 30 years, and the last several have only lasted about 2 to 3 years before they stop gathering water. I haven't had a Frigidaire for some time, so I'm hoping this unit will have more longevity. I've had it for about a month and it's worked well to this point. To me, the pros are that it's quieter than others I've had. It has easy to use controls, a very obvious flashing horizontal light bar that notifies that it's full, and the bucket is not too difficult to remove and replace. I really like the flashing light bar, and the fan turns off until the bucket is emptied. The cons are that the bucket is awkward to dump. Past units I've had have an open top to the bucket. This one has a clear plastic cover on it with few openings through which to pour the water. I usually end up having some water wet my hand that's holding the handle. The intake is on the back of the unit and the exhaust is on the right side as you look at it from the front. That has made it awkward for me to place the unit. I have to keep it out in the open so those sides aren't restricted, which puts it in the way of movement in the area. I haven't used the hose option and probably won't, so I don't have any input on that.

      Good Medium-Sized Dehumidifier

I bought this dehumidifier for my basement, which can get damp during rainy periods during the spring and summer. From other reviews, I noticed that some of these machines do not last long - maybe a year or two at best. I believe these short lifetimes are caused by frequent on/off cycling of the compressor. I suspect the problem may be that the humidistat is built into the machine, where the air becomes dried fastest. This causes the machine to shut off prematurely and then turn on again, etc. So, what I did was to buy a separate dehumidifier control, which I installed well away from the dehumidifier, with a long (heavy duty) extension cord connecting the two. I set the control to 42 percent and set the dehumidifier to "run constantly." This has greatly reduced power cycling in the dehumidifier and (hopefully) will extend its serivce life. As far as the machine itself is concerned, it is fairly quiet and works well. My only compaint is that it seems to have a really tough time drawing moisture from the air once the humidity gets down to about 42 percent. Otherwise, this seems to be a very good machine for the money.

This product has been a solid purchase so far. It definitely sucks the moisture out of the air and isn’t really all the loud, even at its max fan speed. I wouldn’t be able to sleep in the same room as the dehumidifier, however. The only two downsides I have seen so far is that it really heats up the house (great in the winter though) and that you have to shut the machine off and let it sit for awhile before removing the bucket. If you don’t it drains some water after it’s removed and then you have to soak it up with a towel from the frame and the floor. It’s not a ton of water but it took me a few times to figure out why I had a puddle on the floor. It’s done exactly what I bought it for so I have no regrets, so far!

This is my first dehumidifier for my household and it does a great job, it's used in my basement wich I considered as a mid size (sorry I don't have the basement size to be more specific about coberture at the moment of my review). I bought the 50-Pint size (Frigidaire FFAD5033R1) and think is good enough for my basement, I like the fact that it's pretty quiet, the fan noise is really low when its activated, it doesn't bother at all when we're watching tv since my home theater system is in the BM. It's so easy to empty the water when it's full, it doesn't overheat (It's been working continuosly since we purchased it over a month ago) and no mayor maintenance is required other than that. We're happy with it, planning to get a second one for the office/studio room located also in the BM.
