You don't need a subscription. You don't need to have your phone. It syncs and transfer the data via Connect app once it connects your phone.

The device uses it owns GPS to track your activity so you do not need to have your phone with you. Once you are back in range of the phone or open the Connect app it should sync. Debbie with Garmin
