It will work when Bluetooth is off but won't get weather and messages. Once you turn the Bluetooth on it will load your stats to the app.

I specifically wanted a fitness tracker with the ability to turn off Bluetooth and this Garmin has been great! I connect it in the morning and at night before I take it off for bed. It still counts all my steps throughout the day with my Bluetooth off and it syncs when I connect it at night. I love this tracker and I love that it doesn't cause arm pain like my FitBit did. I have turned off the heart rate monitor too.

The device does not need Bluetooth all the time. You'll lose the functions of auto syncing and the ability to receive notifications with Bluetooth off. It will still record your wellness data with BT off. Debbie with Garmin

Not to use as a tracker of activities, it just needs to sync. That being said certain functionalities will be lost if not connected by Bluetooth.
