A:AnswerThis device is not designed for open water swimming nor reading HR in water. I'd recommend a multisport watch like the Forerunner 935 where you can pair a HR Strap that will record HR while swimming.

The device offers an Auto Lap feature that will vibrate when each lap (mile, etc.,) has been reached. You set the distance in this feature to meet your needs.
