Hi Lisa - Thanks for choosing GE! The drain system allows water to flow through the basket and out the bottom of the tub pulling lint, hair, and small particles with the water. This should not be an issue with septic tanks because most lint, pet hair, etc. is biodegradable and septic tanks are designed to handle these fibers. A filter is not required.
