Hi - Yes, if it is desired to manually add detergent for a load, that detergent will need to be added directly to the basket, and the smart dispense set to OFF for that particular load. Yes, you can directly add detergent to the washer.

No I use the pods this washer knows how much to use it can tell you the clothes come out very clean it knows how much clothes are in there an a just the water an soap it's great washer
